Empower WoC NTX is a group committed to educating and mobilizing members about issues faced by people of color. These include:
Women’s rights are the rights and entitlements claimed by women and girls worldwide and include: the right to live free from violence, slavery, and discrimination; to be educated; to own property; to vote; to have reproductive freedom and autonomy, and to earn a fair and equal wage. Right now, Texas Republicans are trying to make it impossible for a woman to receive reproductive health that includes safe and legal abortions.
The right to vote is an essential element of democracy in any country, and the proportion of adult citizens who exercise that right in free, fair, and frequent elections is one measure of how democratic a country is. However, the Texas Legislature has a long history of passing laws that prevent or discourage certain groups in our society from registering to vote or casting their ballots, and of using voter suppression and partisan gerrymandering to systematically disenfranchise minority voters.
Civil rights are personal rights that ensure one's entitlement to participate in the civil and political life of society and the state without discrimination or repression regardless of one’s race, religion, ability, or other characteristics. In America, historically, blacks and other minorities have experienced significant inequities in the criminal justice system and through other institutions that we seek to understand and reform.
Human rights are basic rights based on shared values like dignity, fairness, equality, respect and independence. These values are defined and protected by law and belong to every person in the world regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, nationality, religion, sexual preference, ability, or economic status. Today we are plagued by increases in xenophobia and intolerance of those who are different. We fight to honor and preserve human rights for all people.
